Take Action Today! – Contact Governor Polis

CCJRC is proud to join ACLU-CO and over 50 other organizations on this Day of Action, August 27, 2020, to demand that Governor Polis do more to address the COVID-19 health crisis that especially threatens people in prison who have limited ability for social distancing and other strategies known to reduce transmission of the virus.  

To date, 883 people in prison have tested positive for COVID-19 with outbreaks occurring in multiple facilities and 3 have tragically died.

Here are a few things that CCJRC urges the Governor to do to protect the health and safety of people in prison and DOC staff.
  • Reinstate the Executive Orders the Governor allowed to lapse and add new orders to include temporarily expanding the number of Parole Board members who can conduct release application hearings.
 
  • Require the DOC amplify their efforts to identify people who are eligible for Special Needs Parole due to their medical or mental health conditions and expedite the application process for consideration by the Parole Board.
 
  • Create a special and expedited COVID-19 commutation process for those that do not meet the statutory criteria for Special Needs Parole but who are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 due to serious medical conditions or advanced age.

  • Require that the Parole Board immediately schedule parole hearings for the over 500 people currently in prison who are past their parole eligibility date who were sentenced for either drug possession or escape since both crimes were reduced to misdemeanors and are no longer even eligible for a prison sentence.
 
  • Support CCJRC’s request that all inmates be awarded the maximum amount (up to 120 days) of exceptional conduct earned time in recognition of their cooperation and the hardships they and their loved ones have faced as a result of COVID mitigation measures in DOC.
 
  • Require DOC to review all inmates currently housed in a private prison who are past their parole eligibility date and request that the Parole Board move up as quickly as possible a parole hearing for those with good institutional conduct and a parole plan.
